USER STORY 1

" As a nurse in a clinic,
I would like to see and print all legally required patient documentation,
in order to provide healthcare records to the patient. "

USER PAIN POINTS

  • Feature is not discoverable by users; it was not intuitive to users post-onboarding training.

  • Requires too many clicks to obtain desired results.

SUGGESTED SOLUTION

To expose the new search shortcuts in order to improve the current workflow and educate users that they can insert any keyword that they want.

  1     Research
Proposed several improvements and new features to the flow, based on my research into Emerge's current search logic, as well as into the way search layouts are built for other health care systems.

  2     Recent searches fix
Suggested to remove recent search buttons and adopt the common design pattern of a drop down menu that expands when the user clicks the search bar instead.

  3     Date picker fix
During the process, it was clear the date picker would have to be moved out of the search input field and into the entire search container, in addition to the already-planned best practices for date picker interactions.

  4     The shortcuts container
Adding selected search term shortcuts panel in response to BI analytics review, user feedback and research on industry terminology.

USER STORY 2

" As a primary care provider,
I would like to pull a certain result from a large amount of data as quickly as possible, so

that I can provide the right treatment to the patient. "

USER PAIN POINTS

  • Data overload in search results.

  • Low visibility of existing filters.

  • Missing search filter capabilities.

  • Inconsistency in naming between search filters and healthcare industry terms.

  • Responsiveness issue.

SUGGESTED SOLUTION

To expand filtering and sorting actions and improve usability of the existing feature.

  1     Research

During my research on different approaches to sorting and filtering, I continually referenced this article. Despite it being written in 2009, I found the myths he described to still be relevant today and used them to develop my thinking.

  2     Layout fix

Suggested moving the results region elsewhere, and replacing it with the filters for higher visibility.

  3     Usability improvements

  • Adding 'clear filter' button.

  • Make filters a multi-selection dropdown.

  • Display number of selected items in filter.

  4     New filters

  • Adding new filters to the panel based on relevant user data and client requests.

USER STORY 3

" As a physician I would like to search for a certain procedure and automatically view related results on the same page,

so I can save time on additional searches and proscribe treatment faster. "

USER PAIN POINTS

  • Multiple search queries needed for every scenario.

  • No way for results from multiple searches to appear on the same page.

SUGGESTED SOLUTION

To save the client time, reduce clicks in their search path, and allow them to view all connected results on the same page at once.

Using BI and medical data configuration, there was a cross-team effort to enrich search results so that particular search terms also include related results.
